What outdoor plants are easy to look after?

If you are wanting to spruce up your garden a bit this year then you may be starting to plan how you want it to look. Having plants or trees in your garden can really help make it look colourful and help attract nature such as butterflies, birds and squirrels. Gardening has also been proven to be incredibly therapeutic. If you are a bit of a novice at gardening, then you will want to start off with some easy plants and trees. Once you have mastered these you can then try and introduce more complex vegetation. Apple trees, believe it or not, are a great first tree to introduce into your garden. You don’t need to have acers of room as the dwarf options are perfect for borders. Be sure... Continue reading

Getting your garden ready for the colder months

With the darn nights drawing in and the colder weather coming in fast, many people are trying to give their garden one last go over before it must be left until spring. Over the winter months grass tends to not grow very fast at all so you shouldn’t have to worry too much about cutting it. When you do your final cut before winter, you need to try and take it short but not too short that it dies off completely. During the winter months you will not have many opportunities to pick up your trowel and start doing the... Continue reading

Garden security explored

When you think about your garden you will probably think about what plants you want in it, when you need to mow the lawn and how to keep it looking beautiful, but do you ever consider your security. The garden is your home’s first line of defence against burglary and theft so it is vital that you ensure you have a good level of security around your perimeter. This can be enough to put off burglars and protect your home. Burglars will also often access homes and gardens through public access routes such as an alley or walkway. If you have a private alleyway down the side of your house you may want to fit a high, strong lockable gate. Installing fencing on top of a low wall may be... Continue reading

Claiming back your garden

Having a garden can be perfect especially if you have children who love spending time outdoors. You will probably find that especially during the summer months, your garden becomes a bit of a child’s playground and it is very quick for a garden to become filled up with slides, swings, trampolines and paddling pools. This may give your children plenty to do on the warm summer days but it can take a toll on your garden. Not only may it affect the growth of the grass, often killing off areas that cannot get the sun or get trampled on a lot, but it can make maintaining it hard work.   If the grass has been killed it can take months to get it to grow back and often it may... Do you need to water your grass?

We often think about watering our plants inside and outside, but how many of us think about watering our grass? Grass will often survive quite dry periods of weather and in the UK we do not often have to wait long for the rain to come, but if we do experience a week or more of dry weather then it is advisable to water your grass. If you have recently had new turf laid or have grown grass from grass seed, then it is even more important to ensure that you water it regularly, at least every other day, to ensure it survives. The easiest way to water grass is by using a hose pipe with a sprinkler attachment. This will evenly distribute the water over the grass, rather than... Continue reading
